Sir Trevor McDonald is to present a new six-part series on car crime for ITV1.
Folio Productions, part of Mentorn Media, is producing Car Crime UK for the broadcaster.
Figures show that every minute of every day, a car is stolen or broken into in Britain. Car Crime UK follows elite police squads across the country to reveal the full extent of the problem.
From Manchester, Humberside and Edinburgh in the north, to Devon and Cornwall and London in the south, the series looks in depth at the role of the police through the eyes of the officers themselves, in-car cameras and CCTV footage.
Commissioned by Diana Howie ITV Commissioning Editor for Factual and Alison Sharman, Director of Factual and Daytime, the series portrays day-to-day realities that police squads deal with and examines potential solutions. Howie said: “With Sir Trevor McDonald at the helm plus great access to specialist car crime units across the UK, this series is a genuine stand-out brand in the mix of police programming currently on television.”
Mentorn Media’s Creative Director, Steve Anderson, said: “Our camera teams have been filming across Britain throughout the last few months and have already captured some amazing stories and incidents.
“We are delighted to be working with Sir Trevor. His journalistic authority combined with our expertise in observational documentary-making promises to make this a series that no car owner can afford to miss.”
Car Crime UK is scheduled to transmit in the summer. The Series Producer is Dan Exelby and the Executive Producers are Matt Holden and Steve Anderson.
Mentorn International is launching the series, called Car Criminals, to the international market at MIPTV 2009.
