• David Emerson, is joining Mentorn Media as Head of Formats and Features, it was announced today (FRI).

    The appointment comes as Mentorn Media also recognised the successes of a number of their team in making significant internal promotions.

    Previously David Emerson worked as Head of Features at Betty where he produced a number of factual entertainment and features programmes including: The Food Inspectors for BBC One; Rip Off Food for BBC Two; and the Autistic Gardener and Country House Rescue for Channel 4. Emerson was at Betty since 2010 and also worked on developing hit formats Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners for Channel 4 and Too Ugly for Love for Discovery.

    Before working at Betty, Emerson worked as Series Producer at Red House and Talkback Thames making How Clean is Your House, Property Ladder and Britain’s Best Home.

    Mark Roberts also announced that Creative Executive and multi-award winning film-maker, Iain Scollay has been promoted to Head of Documentaries,

    Scollay joined Mentorn just over a year ago from the BBC and is based in Mentorn Scotland’s Glasgow office. Over the past year, Scollay has been responsible for the Costa de Sol – The Last Brits Standing for BBC One, Britain’s Poshest Nannies for ITV, and How Scotland Works for BBC.

    Iain’s promotion completes a round of appointments and promotions which has seen Development Executive Matthew Clifton become Head of Development with Natalie Hill joining as development executive and executive producer.

    Matthew Clifton’s promotion to Head of Development comes after he has spent the past four years working in Mentorn Media’s Development team. He originated and developed the much talked-about television programmes: Fried Chicken Shop and Celeb Hunter with Chris Stark, both for Channel 4.

    Mark Roberts added: “Matt is a rising star of the TV world.  He loves television and is determined to find ideas that innovate and surprise.  He will thrive in his role of Head of Development.”

    Clifton said: “There’s nothing quite like seeing ideas go from words to an on-screen reality. I’m very proud of the development ideas that have come to fruition at Mentorn Media so far and I look forward to this next creative chapter.”

    In his new role, his first appointment has been Development Executive, Natalie Hill, who joins Mentorn from Ten66 where she was also Development Executive.  She has experience as Series Editor and producer as well as within development roles and has worked on successful factual entertainment series including Katie Hopkins: My Fat Story, Stacey Dooley Investigates, Street Kid World Cup; Shops and Robbers, Dispatches, The Apprentice, 24 Hours In A & E, Heston’s Fantastical Food, Great British Menu to mention a few.

    Clifton said: “I’m delighted to welcome Natalie to the team. She has a wealth of experience in developing factual entrainment series for all the broadcasters as well as working as series producer, executive producer on a number of them. She’s a fantastic addition to the team.”

    The development and growth within Mentorn follows the promotion of Tayte Simpson to Director of Programmes in 2014.

  • The last UK-wide television set-piece of the General Election will be a special edition of BBC One’s political debate programme, Question Time, broadcast live from Leeds on Thursday April 30th.

    A week before polling day, a Question Time Election Leaders Special, produced by Mentorn Scotland, will feature one by one, Conservative leader David Cameron, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg.

    The programme, hosted by David Dimbleby, will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC News Channel live from 8pm to 9.30pm.

    Each of the leaders will separately face 30 minutes of questions posed by a studio audience with the usual Question Time format.

     

  • Mentorn Scotland’s programme, Scotland Decides: The Big, Big Debate, has been nominated in the Referendum Programme category for the prestigious Royal Television Society (RTS) Scotland Award 2014, it has been announced.

    The one-hour programme, which aired on BBC One Scotland in September 2014, saw an audience of 16 and 17-year-old first-time voters quiz key politicians and personalities from both the Yes and No campaigns on the issues that mattered most to them and was presented by James Cook.

    The RTS Scotland Awards take place on Wednesday 20th May 2015.

  • Mentorn Media Scotland, a part of the Tinopolis Group, has been commissioned to make a new three-part documentary series that will take an in-depth look at modern Scotland.

    Commissioned by Craig Hunter, ‘How Scotland Works’ (3x60) will examine life in Contemporary Scotland through the country’s evolving industries, its changing people and how brand Scotland is used internationally.   

    Each hour-long episode will look at specific themes – Scotland at Work, Brand Scotland and 21st Century Scots. Scotland at Work reveals the story of modern Scotland at work, using first-hand accounts from a range of contributors, from farmers and fishermen to call centre workers and staff at the Gleneagles Hotel. The second episode, Brand Scotland, will investigate the strength of Scotland’s brand, what it is worth and why it’s so appealing to people all over the world. In the final episode, 21st Century Scotland, the attention is turned to its residents. The programme meets Scots of all ages from all across the country, to tell the story of life in modern Scotland from birth to old age.

    Craig Hunter, BBC Commissioning Editor, Science and Natural History, said: “2015 feels like the right time to take stock and examine what Scotland looks like today. We’re used to seeing historical documentaries telling the story of Scotland of old, but this contemporary series celebrates Scotland today – and it’s incredibly revealing."

    How Scotland Works is executive produced by Iain Scollay and series produced by Andrew Abbott for Mentorn Media Scotland. The series will air in the spring on BBC Two Scotland.

  • Question Time Comes from Salford Tomorrow Night

    BBC One’s political debate programme, Question Time, is being hosted from Salford on Thursday, 2nd April 2015.

    David Dimbleby chairs the programme from Salford in Manchester where Conservative Chief Whip, Michael Gove; Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, Andy Burnham; Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander; Independent columnist, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Mail on Sunday columnist, Peter Hitchens, face questions from the audience.  

    Question Time transmits on Thursday evening on BBC One at 10.45pm and will be available on BBC iPlayer after transmission.
